About the Founder: Tony Fiddis

Tony Fiddis is an international China analyst, legal scholar, and the founder and lead presenter of China Update and Market Update. He also hosts the China Update geopolitical audio podcast distributed across Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

 

Background & Credentials

A New Zealand native, Tony brings a rare synthesis of Western legal training and extensive, firsthand Chinese institutional experience:

 

  • Over a Decade on the Ground in China: Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Tony lived, worked, and conducted research within mainland China for over ten years, providing him with a nuanced understanding of domestic societal and business dynamics.
  • Peking University (PKU), Beijing: Earned a Master’s Degree in International Relations from China’s premier academic institution as a recipient of the New Zealand Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia and the prestigious Lingyun Award for Academic Excellence. His research centered on Chinese foreign policy, international trade law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Diplomatic & Academic Exchange: Served as Liaison Officer at the New Zealand Centre at Peking University, working at the formal intersection of New Zealand–China bilateral relations.
  • Legal Admittance: Holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Victoria University of Wellington and is admitted to the High Court of New Zealand as a Barrister and Solicitor.
